Synopsis
An inspiring story of a small town boy (Ekolu Kalama) from the island of Molokai, who dreams of becoming a professional waterman, and grows up to become the first paid professional paddle boarder in history. He overcame adversity, excelled, and went on to become #1 the World, winning the 2009 World SUP Championship. Ekolu’s co-stars are Ikaika Kawaii and Kelson Kihe, both joined Ekolu on the Stand Up Paddle Professional World Tour in 2010. The three became known as the SUP KANAKS. The cast is rounded out with a trio of special guest waveriders: (1) Ekolu’s wife, Honora Kalama, (2)Jordan Kekahuna Lawrence (RIP), and Captain Ron Suffron(producer/director/waverider). Film provides a unique combination of Live performances blended with breath taking visuals, highlighting amazing supsurfing talents, the majestic, natural beauty of Hawaii, including dolphins, honu (turtles), birds, and more… with an informative and educational perspective on Hawaiian history and culture… ALL set to the soothing, rhythmic, and upbeat island sounds from Ekolu ’s incredible “Dare to Dream” soundtrack, with 2 bonus songs : Hoomakaukau and Captain America. The Hawaiians, gifted in the ocean beyond measure,
reveled in the art of surfing
“He‘e Nalu”
“He’e” - meaning to surf or slide
and “Nalu” - meaning wave
In the days of old,
Hawaiian society was distinctly stratified
into royal and common classes,
this also extended into the surf zone.
The ALI’I (The Chiefs)
rode waves on the largest boards
named “olo” , which were sometimes up to 20 feet long.
The commoners rode smaller boards called
“paipo” (prone), and “alaia” (surfboards)
The Hawaiians being master waterman and expert ocean navigators
instinctively combined the paddle (Hoe), from the canoe (wa’a),
and used the paddle to propel the very large surfboards. Which has become known as stand up paddling.
Wave riding has been an integral part of the Hawaiian culture
for thousands of years and has progressed into the modern day.
In 2008 a young Hawaiian Chief, Ekolu Kalama continued the tradition of the Ali’i (Chiefs, royalty) riding big boards,
and became the first paid professional stand up paddler in history, he excelled and went on to become
number one in the world winning the Stand Up Paddling World Championship in 2009.
In 2010, two other young Hawaiians, Ikaika Kawai and Kelson Kihe joined Ekolu on the Stand Up Paddle professional world tour,
each unleashing they’re own innovative, raw, and explosive styles of wave riding
